What do we mean by Christian Science Nursing?

The following is an excerpt from a document which was prepared by Christian Science Nursing Activities and published by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in April 2011.  The full document can be found in this link.

‘THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSE

SCOPE OF SERVICES

Christian Science nursing is a practical, spiritual ministry that actively supports the patient’s decision to rely on Christian Science for healing.  It is grounded in the Bible-based theology of Christian Science, which includes Christ Jesus’ commandment to love one another. (see John 15:12) This ministry is carried out with prayer, wisdom, compassion and skill.

The founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, established the authority and standard for the Christian Science nurse in 1908 in The Manual of The Mother Church. (Page 49, Article VIII, Section 31):

Christian Science Nurse.  SECT. 31.  A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.

The cards of such persons may be inserted in The Christian Science Journal under rules established by the publishers.

Individuals advertising in The Christian Science Journal have presented satisfactory evidence that they fulfil the requirements in this By-law.’

The information about what Christian Science nursing includes and doesn’t include is to be found in the link above.

How can you become a Christian Science nurse?

There are various ways to learn how to become a Christian Science nurse.  There are Christian Science nursing facilities in the USA UK and Switzerland where you can take courses and be mentored under the supervision of a Christian Science nurse (or Christian Science nurses) listed in The Christian Science Journal.  It is also possible to receive training and mentoring to work in the field in patient’s homes, from a Christian Science nurse listed in The Christian Science Journal.

Le Verger offers courses and mentoring both in the facility and in the field, depending on the student’s individual needs and circumstances, and the needs of the patients and the field.
